1971 Eriba Puck Restoration - Headliner Installation Part 2

Vince Ordonez

Front and Rear Sections

The first step to installing the headliner is to install the front and rear headliner sections. These sections are stapled onto the tack strip I installed earlier. These sections are not really visible because they are above the front and rear hatches but It feels more complete to install these sections.

Headliner Patterning

Using double sided basting tape I was able to lay in Durascrim patterning material and trace each section of headliner onto the patterning material. Each pattern was transferred to the vinyl and the pattern was cut out.

Vinyl Sections

Each vinyl section was backed with 1/2" sew foam and  labeled with it's section ID.

Support Wire Sleeve

The support wires require a sleeve on each headliner section that is sewn together. I created the sleeves out of waterproof/mildew proof material. These sleeves will be sewn onto the selvage of each seam. The wires are first slid into the sleeves and then when installed are pushed into pre drilled holes on the roof frame.

Test Layout

Before sewing the headliner together I did a test layout to make sure everything is matching and symmetrical.

Sewing

After sewing the sections the headliner looks like this:

Installation

The headliner is supported by support wires. These wires are inserted into the sewn in sleeves. The wires are held in place by holes drilled into the camper frame. The wires form an arch that support the headliner and the edges are stapled to the installed tack strips. The headliner is steamed and stretched then stapled.

The vinyl around the roof opening will be pulled tight and glued.
